Contest Closed

RULES

1. GENERAL RULES
For the general rules see Elftown Creature Marathon#RULES!

Copied art is NOT permissible in Elftown's Official Contests. Please see: Copying vs Fanart & Referencing.

2. EACH MEMBER MAY SUBMIT ONE (1) ENTRY
Exceptions might be offered if there is a valid reason for it. But, if you do submit more than one image, you will greatly lower your chance of winning, as the votes for your style will be spread out on two entries.

3. ALL IMAGES MUST BE UPLOADED TO ELFTOWN!
To upload your image full-size you can use the feature 'Upload a folder of images' that is shown on your house.
This feature allows you to upload one, multiple images or zip-files in their original size to a wikipage.
<URL:upload_zip.html>
Once you click this link you can follow the instructions. See also uploading images.

4. THEME
Any entry that does not follow the "Nymph theme", will be removed.
If you feel any of the entries break the rules, please speak up before the entries make it to the polls. You can still speak up even after the contest is closed, as long as the polls have not yet gone up yet. Complaints received after the aforementioned will not be considered valid.

5. MEDIUM
All mediums, excepting photography (and/or manipulations) and animations will be accepted.

REMEMBER THE GOAL: We want the BEST QUALITY images to represent Elftown having the best Nymph Page on the Internet as part of the Elftown Creature Marathon!

6. POLL
When the finalists are posted in the Main Street Poll or on a public poll page, the participants are not allowed to beg for votes for their own entry. Do not ask people to vote for your entry via private messages, guestbook messages, moods, wikis, or by any other means. Your entry will be disqualified if you are caught doing so. It is perfectly fine to advertise THE POLL, however.

Brief description:

Nymphs are female personifications of nature. They are usually depicted as young, beautiful women but can also be disguised as part of the natural phenomenon they rule over (e.g. a dryad may look like a tree). They are usually bound to the area in which their tree/pond/spring etc. is and often are tied to its fate - a dryad will die if her tree is cut down, etc.

Nymphs come in various forms, representing trees, oceans, and ponds, etc. Dryads, Hamadryads, Naiads, Nereids and Oceanids are all types of nymph and all are acceptable in this contest (though it might be useful to note with your drawing which type you have drawn).

2010-08-22 [wicked fae mage]: So, nymphs are commonly depicted nude, would this contest allow nudity or would you rather I censor the nudity?

2010-08-24 [Hedda]: Try to make it decent, but without censoring it. Censoring looks plain ugly and stupid, but you don't have to make cum shots.

2010-08-24 [wicked fae mage]: Gotcha.

2010-08-30 [Elwyne]: I'm guessing dryads count as nymphs right? I've got one that I've drawn and can enter.

2010-08-30 [Chimes]: Erm. Not sure but I assume so. I'll check for you. :)

2010-08-30 [Elwyne]: I would appreciate it

2010-08-30 [Chimes]: Yep, that's fine. :)

2010-08-30 [Elwyne]: well, I just have to find the disk that I have it on then... if it hasn't gone missing.

2010-08-31 [Galatea]: This looks fun! :)

2010-09-01 [Elwyne]: ummm... I may not be able to put it up after all. My disk is missing. I have it up on my art page, but without the disk that I saved it on I can't download it to this page. Sorry.

2010-09-01 [deeterhi]: Ah, I finally got time to draw something for this contest :)

2010-09-01 [Ravendust]: I'm working on a sketch now myself :) been a while since I've had any inspiration...

2010-09-01 [Ms. Steel]: teehee. I like the title! Drip!

2010-09-01 [deeterhi]: Thanks! I like the theme. I've drawn Dryads before, but this time I wanted to do something different so I created a water nymph ^^

2010-09-02 [The GraveDigger]: nymphs and dryads are two different fantasy creatures first off. and secondly the picture entered needs to do research because that would be a water elemental not a nymph. why the internet exist is for research. nymphs are beautiful faye women who lure men in and if the man does not marry them they end up slaying them. other myths say they kill men with just their looks. there. i feel better

2010-09-02 [deeterhi]: First, I never said nymphs and dryads were the same. Secondly, somebody asked in the comments above if they could draw a Dryad, and so I assumed I could create my version of a Naiad. Thirdly, it's called taking a creative license, but if it offends you that much, I will take it down.

2010-09-02 [Ms. Steel]: In classical mythology (from which parts of fantasy would stem), Dryads, Naiads, Nereids (and a few other -ids and -ads) all fall under the general umbrella of nymph.

Instead of insulting people, [The GraveDigger], perhaps you could try and draw your own quintessential nymph and enter it in the contest, so that we may be blown away by its perfect and inherent nymphness.

2010-09-02 [deeterhi]: I'm not stressed.

There's no harm in me putting my entry up because if the moderator watching sees that it does not fit the theme, it will be taken down, right? I won't be upset. Those are the rules. In an ideal world, people wouldn't be rude to each other over the silliest things, but this isn't an ideal world.

2010-09-02 [The GraveDigger]: i'm not insulting. insulting would say his drawing sucked. but it does not. just not right catagory and maybe you should read comments a little better instead of thinking negative and think that maybe just maybe i was trying to help resolve the question of the person who asked is they can post their dryad. deeterhi your picture i like. i just think it does not fit the catagory.

2010-09-02 [windowframe]: Her. [deeterhi] is a female (maybe you should try that research thing you were talking about to get people's gender right? :P) And secondly, as [Ms. Steel] said, in Classical myth, Dryads, Naiads, Nereids, and others all come under the umbrella term of 'nymph' and seem to undergo some strange metamorphosis between being people and being simple the pool of water they're guarding [deeterhi]'s picture gets that across pretty well, I think. (also: check the descriptions in Homer of Thetis emerging from the water, it often reads as if she's turning from water into human form) I'd be quite tempted to throw your 'go do some research' straight back at you because the definition you provided doesn't look particularly well researched to me, but I assume you have done some research somewhere, just not research into classical nymphs. :) (actually, your definition sounds far more like a siren than a nymph to me)

And finally, since you're not a mod: it simply doesn't matter if you think it fits the category or not. [deeterhi] I think you're picture fits the theme just fine. And sorry [The GraveDigger], but you did come across as pretty rude, even if you didn't intend to.

However, I see that we don't have a typical description of a nymph on this page, so I'll add that now and this discussion can end, (having served at least one useful purpose :p) before I turn into a crazy fascist lady and go all fascist on your asses. >=O

2010-09-02 [Ravendust]: mmm... question of my own; I know that typically nymphs are more personifications of actual nature- water, earth... but what about fire? I was thinking a volcanic nymph and have an interesting image in mind... Probably gonna draw it either way, but I wonder if it'd be fitting?
